The original game of the series, Keio Yuugekitai (translated fairly literally as "Keio Flying Squadron" in Europe and the United States) was a fairly competent side-scrolling shooter game first released in 1994. I'm no great judge of side scrolling shooting games, however reviews from the era gave it the reputation of being a respectable title for the somewhat lonely Sega CD platform, with a crazy story and entertainingly bizarre set of characters placed in the context of a respectable shooter.

While it would be inaccurate to class this as a truly major title of its era, it had the most media attention of all Keio Yuugekitai titles released in all territories. Advertisements were taken out in magazines of all regions, and most major magazines which covered the Sega CD gave it positive reviews. JVC even came up with a gimmick for American magazines, sending bunny ears along with review copies to further the marketing angle of focusing on Rami's attire.

Story

In 17th-century Edo, where girls rode dragons and revealing bunny suits eschewed the typical Renaissance-era perception of revealing dresses as whore-like, something is amiss. Rami, a young 14 year old girl and her grandparents have been given the task of guarding the Key to the Secret Treasure. Nobody’s quite sure what it unlocks, but it’s important, and therefore one day when the key has gone missing, Rami is forced to go on a quest to pursue it and return the key to its rightful place.

Unfortunately, Rami finds that Dr. Pon, the local superintelligent raccoon is the one with the key, and intends to do something dastardly with it.. probably. Then begins a chase of epic proportions.
